Who is Bikram Choudhury?
Born in 1946 in Kalkutta, Bikram Choudhury (photo right) was
already practicing Hatha-Yoga at the age of 4. At the age of 12, he
became the youngest Yoga Champion of India and would hold onto this
title for many years. As a teenager, he dedicated himself to running
marathons and weightlifting.
At the age of 20, he fell
victim to a terrible knee injury from
weightlifting. His doctors prediction stated that he would never be
able to walk properly again. Under the direction and guidance of his
teacher Bishnu Gosh, brother of Paramahansa Yogananada
(“Autobiography of a Yogi”), Bikram began to heal his knee with the
help of Hatha-Yoga.
Bikram has been teaching his yoga series in Los Angeles for over 30
years. Today, Bikram Yoga is considered to be one of the most
successful forms of Yoga in the USA. For approximately 10 years, Bikram
has been conducting an intensive teacher training course. Presently
there are more than 600 Bikram Yoga schools worldwide.
